THEFT OF CHURCH CHOIR STALL LIGHTS

On the 26th August, between 3pm and 6pm, the four antique Choir Stall lights were stolen - ripped from the pews for their metal-work. If anyone saw anything suspicious or recorded anything on a door-cam or similar device, please would they contact either Simon or the Churchwardens.

These pictures show the end result and below what we have left and how the Chancel used to look. They are irreplaceable, of course.

Vandalism and Theft has always been a problem for churches. Harting Church will continue to stay open during the day. It was at the forefront of this in the early 20th Century.

It is interesting to note that this is not just a modern phenomenon. Andrew Shaxson uncovered the following regarding what appears to be something similar from the West Sussex Gazette of 6th September 1928:

TRIPPER VANDALISM "An instance of tripper vandalism which caused some inconvenience was reported, against which we shall have to take further precautions", states a 'Church News' article concerning a church council meeting. "We are reluctant to diminish the freedom of access to the church in any way, for Harting was a pioneer in the 'Open Church Movement', and practically for half a century its doors have not been locked day or night and we hope many a visitor has found rest and peace and healing there. More and more we are learning to appreciate the calming and uplifting influence of 'entering into the Silence' within its ancient and Mystic walls."
