Faith Seeking Understanding
Join us in the Law Room for an hour or so of relaxed and open-minded discussion. 15th October happens to be the anniversary of St Hildegard of Bingen, a remarkable twelfth century visionary and polymath, so perhaps we could talk about the influence of Christian women and also share some of Hildegard’s insights about creation. All welcome.

VJ Day 80 Commemoration
The 80th anniversary of VJ Day falls on 15th August, and we shall honour the memory of those who fought and died in the Far East in what is often called the ‘Forgotten War’.
British civilians also suffered greatly following the Fall of Singapore, many of them dying in refugee camps from malnutrition and disease. They, too, deserve our remembrance.
On Monday 11th August Margie Caldicott, from St Paul’s Church in Chichester, is kindly coming to us to talk to us about the women and children, including her mother, who were interned in a camp in Palembang in Sumatra in the most squalid and brutalising conditions. Among the other inmates was the missionary Margaret Dryburgh, who formed a ‘vocal orchestra’ to help sustain morale, and wrote the famous ‘Captives’ Hymn’ which was sung every Sunday (you can hear moving renditions of it on YouTube).
Margie has visited Sumatra and was present at the dedication of a memorial to those who died there. Her talk will be in the Law Room at 6pm. Wine and soft drinks will be available.

National Bells Ring out VE Day
Harting Church will join bells across the nation in ringing out at 6:30 pm following the service at 5.45pm to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe
VE Day celebrations - 80th Anniversary
2025 will mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
At 6.30pm that evening, churches and cathedrals across the country are being asked to ring their bells in celebration. Our own wonderful bellringers here in Harting will be taking part that evening, and before they do so we shall be holding a short service in church to which you are all warmly invited. The service will begin at 5.45pm (to conclude by 6.25pm) and will include the singing of ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘I vow to thee my country’. It will be a good old patriotic celebration!
After the service, while the bells are being rung, we invite you to enjoy fish and chips and a cup of tea (or a glass of wine) in the Law Room. Winston Churchill famously refused to impose rationing on fish and chips, even during the darkest years of the War. We will need to order them in advance, so if you’d like to reserve a portion, please sign the list that will be placed at the back of the church.
APCM - Elsted PCC
The APCM for Elsted PCC will take place after the Sunday Service. All who are on the electoral roll are welcome to attend
